PT (Preferred Term)

What is it?

A Preferred Term is the standardized MedDRA term actually used for coding, counting, and reporting a specific symptom, diagnosis, or finding. It sits in the middle of MedDRA's five-level hierarchy: broader than the Lowest Level Term, which stays close to a reporter's own wording, and narrower than the grouping levels above it used for browsing and analysis.

Whenever a case gets counted, compared across a database, or fed into disproportionality analysis, it's the PT doing the work. Everything upstream, from a patient's free-text description to a coder's judgment call, exists to land on the right one.

Common Misconceptions

Myth

"So the Preferred Term is basically whatever the patient or doctor originally wrote down?"

Truth

That original wording is the Lowest Level Term, one rung below. The PT is the standardized term it gets mapped up to, which is what actually makes different patients' different phrasings comparable and countable in the first place.
